Welcome of the chair

On behalf of the Organizing Committee, it is our great pleasure to welcome you to the 5th International Conference on electromagnetic Near-field Characterization and Imaging (ICONIC 2011), in the city of Rouen, France. Over the years, the ICONIC has evolved into a major international event, where researchers from both industry and academia discuss and investigate the emerging challenges in the domain of near-field (NF) characterization, modeling, simulation, measurement technique and their applications, and has established a reputation in inviting well-known international scientists as guest speakers. The 2011 edition is a particular one, marked by an economic crisis. Both the number of papers submitted and the number of participants have decreased for budgetary reasons, mainly for our industrial colleagues. We have received 61 technical papers from 16 different countries (China, Czech Republic, Finland, France, Germany, Iran, Italy, Morocco, Russia, South Korea, Spain, Switzerland, the United Kingdom, the United Arab Emirates, the USA, and Turkey). Each paper was sent to two reviewers for evaluation. The Scientific Committee meeting was held in June 2009 in Taipei (Taiwan). After the challenging task of selecting the best contributions from the many submissions, 51 papers were selected based on the reviewers’ ratings and comments. The selected papers cover nearly all aspects of the key areas of NF characterization.

The program also includes three keynotes talks:
  • “Mid-infrared near-field microscopy applied to plasmonics” presented by Prof. Yannick De Wilde, LOP, ESPCI, CNRS UPR A0005, Univ. Pierre & Marie Curie, Paris VI, France

  • “Exposure on near-field: Modeling and future challenge” presented by Dr. Azeddine Gati, RD-RESA-ISS, Paris, France

  • “Nanoaperture antennas to enhance optical spectroscopies” presented by Prof. Jérôme Wenger, Institut Fresnel, CNRS, Aix-Marseille Université, Ecole Centrale Marseille, France
As a new initiative, ICONIC 2011 offered prizes for the best papers:
  • First prize: “Semi-embedded RFID sensor networks for imaging applications” by Marta Guardiola, Gemma Roqueta, Santiago Capdevila, Jordi Romeu and Lluis Jofre.

  • Second prize: “Wide-band near-field microwave microscope” by Kamel Haddadi, Tuami Lasri and Hind Bakli.

  • Third prize: “Local EM perturbations into CMOS ring oscillator” by Francois Poucheret, Philippe Maurine and Laurent Chusseau.
An exciting social program has been planned: a welcome reception on Thursday evening, a guided visit of the “old town of Rouen” with its cathedral and medieval streets, and a conference dinner will provide some great opportunities to exchange with friends and colleagues. We hope the attendees will enjoy the technical program as well as the social aspects of the conference.

The conference chairs would like to thank all of you, the authors who have prepared and submitted their research papers and the participants attending the conference. We would also like to thank the invited speakers. We gratefully acknowledge the sponsorship of the Haute-Normandie Region, IEEE Instrumentation & Measurement, and ESIGELEC for their support. Many dedicated volunteers have helped in making possible this program, including the reviewers. We cordially express our gratitude for their assistance. This conference is the result of a team effort, without those contributions this event would not be taking place.

It is our most sincere wish that you find ICONIC 2011 a very high quality conference and we wish you an enjoyable stay in Rouen. We hope to meet you in the 6th ICONIC which will hold in Barcelona, SPAIN.
