1st prize in "Rouen through the eyes of international students" photo competition

ESIGELEC scooped the top prize in the “Rouen through the eyes of international students” photo competition by the city of Rouen. The competition ran from May to October 2013 for students to take photos of surprising sides to the city and all it embodies.

Xiaoyu JIANG, Chinese engineering student in his final year, won the competition with his snap entitled “Beneath the cathedral” portraying a young woman putting her backpack on her shoulder at the foot of Rouen Cathedral. The piece, whose light play enhances its beauty, brings to mind old fashioned photography and painting.

"I took this photo in 2011", says Xiaoyu. "I don’t know who this young woman is. Probably a tourist." The young man has been taking photos for 5 years and uses a Ricoh GR1V. It’s the first time he’s entered a competition."I started taking photos when I arrived in France. I’ve never had any lessons, I just do it as an amateur."

The prize from the City of Rouen was an iPad 2, 100€ of gift vouchers at various shops, 3 seats at Hangar 23, 2 cinema tickets and 2 tickets to visit the Gros Horloge.

Another student also came in the top ten: Alejandro Fernandez Huerga came seventh with his photo entitled “Enjoying a sunny day in Rouen.” The young man also takes amateur photos and has been using a Panasonic DMC-FZ28 for 3 years.
